What can reformers in the MENA region learn from the transition experiences of the formerly communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union? This column outlines several insights – first and foremost, that economic reforms do not succeed without political reforms.

Sergei Guriev is the Chief Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). His research focuses on topics related to labor, political economics and economics of development. In 2004-13 he was a professor of economics and Rector at the New Economic School in Moscow. In 2013, he was a professor of economics at Sciences Po, Paris.
